The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, made two visits to the Kuje Maximum Security Prison in Abuja on Tuesday, 5th December, to see former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele. According to a source within the facility, the monarch engaged in extensive discussions with Emefiele during both visits.
Emefiele remains in custody due to his inability to meet the N300 million bail conditions imposed on him by the court. The discussions between the Ooni and the embattled former CBN governor reportedly led to the Ooni advocating for Emefiele's release.
Emefiele faces a six-count charge of procurement fraud filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges allege that he used his position to grant undue advantage to a CBN staff member by awarding a contract worth N1.2 billion for 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020.
Previously, Emefiele had been in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS) for over four months before being apprehended by the anti-graft agency.
Efforts to obtain details about the meetings from the Ooni's spokesperson, Moses Olafare, were unsuccessful, as there was no response to calls or text messages seeking clarification on the monarch's discussions with Emefiele.
