The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly recently passed a resolution allowing Governor Umo Eno to establish an interim administration across the state's 31 local government areas. This decision precedes the expiration of the current chairmen's tenure on December 7.
Governor Eno's message to the Speaker highlighted that the 2023 budget lacked provisions for local government elections, rendering it without allocated funds for such purposes. With the 2024 budget proposals under review before passage, the governor emphasized the expiration of the incumbent local government chairmen's terms as per the Local Government Administration Law, 2017.
Requesting authorization from the House to institute an interim administration pursuant to the same law, Governor Eno acknowledged the State Independent Electoral Commission's ongoing processes toward setting an election date for new council chairpersons. He urged the House to consider his plea due to the impending expiration of the local government councils' tenure.
The House received the governor's message through a motion initiated by Hon. Dr. Nsidibe Akata and seconded by Hon. Precious Selong. Emphasizing the urgency to avoid a governance vacuum at the local level, the Deputy Leader, Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob, supported the governor's request, referencing Section 5 sub 2 of the local government administration law.
Subsequently, the House passed a resolution pursuant to Section 5(2) of the Local Government Administration Law, 2017, after motions by Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob and seconded by Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson. Speaker Udeme Otong directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution to the Governor for further action.
