Frank Kokori, the former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), passed away on a Thursday in a hospital in Warri, Delta State. His demise, revealed by his Personal Assistant, Atawada Oke, followed a battle with a kidney-related illness that had persisted over recent months.
In early November, Kokori drew attention to his deteriorating health condition while confined to his sickbed. His situation prompted a visit from Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who pledged state support to ensure Kokori received top-notch medical care.
Kokori's significance stemmed not just from his labor union leadership but also from his pivotal role in the fight against the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. During this time, he rallied workers against both the election's cancellation and the oppressive military regime.
His dedication to activism and his leadership in mobilizing the workforce against injustice led to his arrest and detention by the military government. His efforts stood as a testament to his unwavering commitment to democracy and social justice.
While Kokori's passing marks the end of an era, his legacy as a formidable figure in Nigeria's labor movement and as a staunch advocate for democratic ideals will endure, leaving a lasting imprint on the country's history.
